Entwined in Eternity: Krishna, Dnyaneshwara, and the Sacred Janmashtami
Shravan Krushna Ashtami, celebrated as Janmashtami in Maharashtra, is a day of profound spiritual resonance. It is not only the birth tithi of Lord Krishna, the divine charioteer of the Bhagavad Gita, but also of Saint Dnyaneshwara, the luminous poet-saint who gifted the world the Dnyaneshwari.
Incidentally, my own birthday—as per the Maharashtrian lunar calendar tithi—falls on this sacred day, weaving an intimate tapestry of connection with both Lord Krishna and Saint Dnyaneshwara. Not only that—it was Saint Dnyaneshwar's Bhavartha Dipika that ignited the beginning of my spiritual journey. This celestial coincidence fills my heart with a tender devotion and a sense of divine purpose.
On this auspicious occasion, I find myself drawn to the timeless teachings of these spiritual luminaries. Lord Krishna, with his flute of enchantment, calls us to the path of love, surrender, and dharma. Saint Dnyaneshwara, with his verses of wisdom, illuminates the journey of the soul towards liberation.
Rather than celebrating this day with worldly gaiety, I choose to immerse myself in the serene waters of spiritual reflection. For me, this day is a serene call to reflect on the soul's journey—playing our destined karmic roles upon the stage of life, until at last we return to the Divine Source and merge with the Supreme.
As the world rejoices in the birth of Lord Krishna, let us also celebrate the birth of wisdom, compassion, and harmony within ourselves. May the melodies of Krishna's flute and the verses of Dnyaneshwara's poetry guide us to a life of purpose and peace. Let this Janmashtami be a symphony of devotion, a dance of divine love, and a celebration of the eternal bond between the soul and the Supreme.
As I reflect on Krishna's life, I am reminded that his wisdom was nourished by many spiritual streams. His path was not confined to a single tradition, but embraced the essence of truth wherever it shone. In the Shiva Mahapurana, it is mentioned that Lord Krishna took initiation from Sage Upamanyu in Shaiva philosophy. This highlights Krishna's quest for spiritual wisdom and his reverence for the teachings of Shaivism. Through this initiation, Krishna embraced the essence of Shaiva philosophy, which emphasizes the union of the individual soul with the cosmic consciousness. This sacred connection between Krishna and Shaivism serves as a reminder of the universality of spiritual truths and the harmonious interplay between different paths of devotion.
Moharatri, the mystical night of enchantment, casts its veil of divine mystery upon Janmashtami. As the moon ascends in its celestial dance, the world pauses to honor the birth of the eternal child, Krishna. This sacred night, steeped in the nectar of devotion, whispers the secrets of the cosmos to the yearning soul.
In the realm of Yoga, Tantra, and spiritual sadhana, Moharatri holds profound significance. The veils of illusion thin, offering seekers a rare opportunity to enter deep states of meditation. The energies of this night amplify prayer, mantra, and ritual, guiding the aspirant toward self-realization and union with the Supreme. In its stillness, the heart becomes a temple of infinite love — a bridge between the mortal and the divine.
During one of the Moharatri nights, Lord Krishna appeared in my deep meditation and conveyed a divine message. He asked me to offer butter and mishri to Lord Shiva, symbolizing the union of devotion and sweetness in spiritual practice. On another occasion, he guided me to offer Kharavas, a traditional colostrum milk pudding that symbolizes divine nourishment and purity, a gesture that deepened my connection to the divine. On yet another occasion, he shared mystical teachings (which I cannot reveal here) on awakening the Anahata Chakra and Prana-Apana Yajna to cultivate deep connection and divine love. This guidance profoundly strengthened my bond with Mahadeva Baba and Gaura Mai.
These sacred experiences have left an indelible mark on my spiritual journey, reminding me of the profound interplay between guidance, surrender, and the eternal bond with the Supreme.
Here, I wish to share a poetic reflection that captures the essence of my sacred feelings about Krishna.
Sacred Entwining
On this sacred day, our birth tithis entwine,
A celestial bond, a connection divine.
Through shared birth, a purpose unfolds,
A tapestry of love, in cosmic molds.
In the stillness of Moharatri's embrace,
Krishna's flute whispers secrets of grace.
Through veils of illusion, the soul takes flight,
Guided by love, bathed in divine light.
Butter and mishri, offerings so sweet,
At Shiva's feet, devotion complete.
Kharavas, a symbol of purity divine,
Nourishing the bond where hearts align.
Anahata awakens, the heart's sacred door,
Krishna's teachings, a celestial lore.
In meditation deep, his presence I find,
A union eternal, of soul and mind.
Oh Krishna, the eternal child,
Your love profound, your play so wild.
In your embrace, cosmos aligns,
A sacred dance where time resigns.
May Krishna's divine flute awaken the eternal melody of love and devotion within our hearts. May the wisdom of Saint Dnyaneshwara illuminate our path toward liberation and harmony. May Mahadeva Baba and Gaura Parvati, Supreme authorities of divine love and liberation, bless us with their infinite grace. On this sacred day, may we find solace in the embrace of the Supreme, and may our souls dance in step with the rhythm of divine grace—until, at last, we return to that eternal home where all journeys end and all love abides.
