Do Not Curse Your Mind
Few days back a reader contacted me with his problem. He said - "You are
teaching us meditation techniques to calm our mind. But I simply can't control
my mind. It is causing me a lot of trouble. As soon as sit for meditation my
mind is becomes restless, constantly thinking about all other matters of life
except meditation! My mind is the culprit for my tensions and stress in the
life."
I am sure many others also feel in the same way. A common tendency of
beginners in Kriya Yoga meditation is to curse mind. They keep on blaming the
mind for its restlessness, uncontrolled thinking, anxiety, worries, stress and
what not. See the fun they hate their mind but cannot live without it. This
cursing only increases their antiquity further.
Why at all you should curse your mind? People normally curse their mind
because they read in books or spiritual talks similar complaints. However, this
is a wrong attitude towards the mind. Spiritual aspirants often find only the
negative side of their mind. Can our mind that is so attached with worldly
objects be good? The answer is of course Yes. All you need is to identify the
positive aspect of the mind instead of its negative ones.
Our mind gets strongly attached with worldly pleasures. When you sit for the
meditation the same attachments, sense pleasures haunt you. Does that means that
the habit of the mind to get attached with something is bad? Not at all. A Kriya
Yogi can turn the same habit so that it now helps him during meditation.
Mind always runs after some object. Time and again it distracts and sticks to
the thoughts that seem pleasurable. This is indeed a great quality. All you need
to do is teach your mind to continue its run after spiritual goals. That's it!
If you can do that your spiritual progress will be much speedy.
Mind likes the objects that give pleasure. For an ordinary person sense
objects give pleasure but for a Kriya Yogi spiritual objects are more important.
That is why one should tune his mind such that it remains attached with
spiritual ideals. There can be various ways to do this. Chanting devotional
songs or bhajans, reading spiritually inspiring book such as Bhagvat
Gita, spending time in the company of holy men are some of the ways to train the
mind sun after spiritual goals. Once your mind starts getting happiness out of
these activities then it will not run after worldly pleasures. It now has
something that is giving more happiness than just sense organs. That way the
mind is happy because it gets something to attached to and your spiritual
progress is also quick. Thus the natural tendency of the mind to continuously
stick to something can be used for better spiritual life.
