The Six Enemies
Once upon a time there was a fighter named Sherjung. He was famous for his
battles with Tigers, Lions and Panthers! These deadly animals used to become
like sheep in front this giant fighter. A king of some country came to know
about his power and challenged him to combat against his adopted Tiger. Sherjung
accepted the challenge. The battle was really tough one. The animal caused
serious wounds to Sherjung and he was very exhausted. However, with his
experience of handling such wild animals he somehow managed to kill the tiger.
Though he won the fight he was looser in fact because the wounds almost made him
paralyzed. He could hardly walk out of the ring and collapsed. The King
requested his vaidya (a person curing patients with the help of
Ayurveda) to take care of this great warrior.
The vaidya was an old, wise and kind man. While giving treatment to
Sherjung he said - "My son, you are real courageous person. Fighting with a
tiger is not an easy task. But do you know there are more dangerous animals than
tigers and lions?" Sherjung was puzzled as he never heard of anything more
dangerous than these wild animals. Seeing question mark on his face, the
vaidya continued - "If you spend some time looking inside your own mind you
will find six most dangerous animals. They are - lust, anger, greed, deliberate
attachment, pride and jealousy. Do you ever knew that someway or the other these
six animals ruled you? Have you ever thought of fighting with them? if you
observe carefully they are responsible for your weak condition today.". Taking a
pause the wise man continued - "You have strong desire to become strongest man
in this world and that desire makes you accept any challenge with ought thinking
anything. If your opponent becomes powerful than you you become angry and in
that anger you make wrong moves. You are greedy about the wealth and gifts that
various Kings offer you for fighting with tigers. You have strong attachment
with the luxuries that you buy from that wealth. You have unreasonable
self-esteem that makes you think that no body can beat you and of course you are
jealous of other fighters performing similar power play."
Sherjung was feeling guilty as he realized his mistakes. With a low tone he
said - "But I was never realized that they exist in me.". The old man smiled and
said - "These enemies are like bubble trapped at the bottom of the sea. When
conditions become favorable they rush upwards from the deep within and burst on
the surface of mind. The real challenge is to defeat this army of six."
Don't you think many of us are "Sherjung" in one way or the other?
Weakened by the wicked six. So, friends let's listen to the wise man and prepare
ourselves to battle against these dangerous and powerful enemies.
