Postures of Consciousness — Bhujangasana
Lie still, earth-surrendered,
then rise — not with effort, but with breath,
the way a cobra lifts its hood at dusk,
unhurried, sovereign, awake.
Your palms press into soil you cannot see,
your sternum opens like a door
swung wide toward some forgotten sky —
the spine remembers it has always known to curve.
Shoulders melt from ears like snow.
The throat, long closed, finds its vowel.
You are not bending backward —
you are uncoiling forward into light.
Insight
In yogic tradition, the cobra is Kundalini herself — the coiled serpent of primal energy resting at the base of the spine. Bhujangāsana is not merely a backbend; it is an awakening gesture. The pose mirrors the moment a snake lifts its head: deliberate, alert, and wholly present.
As the chest rises and the heart center (Anāhata) opens, the posture invites a rare union of vulnerability and strength. The cobra does not rise through aggression; it rises through awareness. In the same way, Bhujangāsana reminds us that true power is not forceful. It emerges when dormant energy is allowed to awaken, when the heart is willing to open, and when consciousness begins to rise from habit into presence.
Benefits
🐍 Strengthens the erector spinae; counteracts the forward hunch of modern sitting. Increases spinal flexibility and disc health.
🫁 Opens the thoracic cavity and intercostal muscles. Deepens lung capacity and stimulates the cardiac region.
🔥 Gentle compression of the abdomen massages the digestive organs. Stimulates the liver, kidneys, and adrenal glands.
🌿 Activates the autonomic nervous system in a gentle way; reduces fatigue and mild depression. Lifts mood and energy.
↑ Gentle lumbar extension relieves pressure on the sciatic nerve. Eases lower back stiffness when practiced mindfully.
☀️ Said to awaken Kundalini energy. Directs prāna upward through the Sushumna nāḍī, energizing body and mind.
That’s all for now. May your intention be clear and your mind be still. With this quiet wish, I rest my pen and return to the silence.
