Waking, dreaming and sound sleeping
Some time ago I explained the nature of the three bodies in my article titled
Who am I - understanding nature of bodies. These three bodies continuously
take experiences from this world. I am writing, I am reading, I am eating food,
I am sleeping, I am dreaming and so on. All these things are experienced by one
of the three bodies. These experiences are tasted in three distinct states of
our consciousness. These states are:
- Jagruta Avasta (waking state)
- Swapna Avasta (dreaming state)
- Sushupti Avasta (sound sleep state)
When we are awake our gross body is continuously engaged in worldly matters.
The sense organs and their functions are constantly working. We call the
experiences taken during waking state as "real". They are proofs for us for
future. In waking state we identify ourselves with our gross body firmly.
When you are dreaming your gross body is not participating in the dream. Our
desires and experiences taken when we are awake leave deep impression in our
subconscious mind. The subtle body then tries to play them for you during sleep.
You do not have control on what is being seen. We discard the experiences taken
during a dream when we awake from sleep. We call them "false" or "imaginary".
When you are in sound sleep you do not remember anything about it when you
awake. You feel happy and joyous after such sleep. This state gives good amount
of relaxation and rest to the body and mind. But as with previous two states
this state also vanishes in the morning.
We undergo these three states day after day but they are not constant. They
come and go. The soul still remains beyond this trio.
